Social media · social media management cost South Africa

How much does social media management cost in South Africa?

A useful price is not just a number. It should show what will be planned, produced, published, managed and measured—and what remains outside the fee.

The short answer: current Orivion planning ranges

For 2026 planning, Orivion publishes three indicative monthly ranges: Essential Presence at R4,950–R7,500, Business Growth at R10,800–R15,000 and Market Authority at R17,500–R30,000. These are planning ranges, not automatic quotes. The final scope changes with platform count, original production, publishing volume, community responsibility and campaign load.

A low monthly fee can be perfectly valid when the work is narrow. It becomes misleading when a proposal uses the words ‘full management’ but excludes the time-intensive parts: strategy, original content, video editing, approvals, response management or useful reporting.

02

What usually changes the monthly price

The largest cost drivers are the amount of original work required and the level of operating responsibility the agency takes on.

  • The number of active platforms and whether each needs unique formatting
  • How many original photographs, Reels, Stories and campaign assets must be produced
  • Whether shoots, locations, contributors, travel and specialist equipment are required
  • Publishing frequency, approval complexity and turnaround expectations
  • Community-management hours, response rules and escalation responsibility
  • Paid-campaign strategy, creative variations and optimisation responsibility
  • Reporting depth and whether leads can be connected back to CRM outcomes
03

What should be written into the proposal

A strong proposal names deliverables instead of relying on labels such as ‘premium package’. It should state the platforms, planned output, production allocation, approval process, revision allowance, publishing responsibility, response scope, reporting rhythm and who owns each account.

Advertising spend should normally be shown separately from the management fee. Usage rights, raw-footage handling, travel, talent, props and after-hours work should also be explicit when relevant.

04

How to compare two very different quotes

Normalize the scopes before comparing the totals. Count the usable outputs, identify how much is original, check who develops the ideas and ask what happens after publishing. A proposal with fewer, stronger assets and a clear decision process can create more value than a high-volume calendar of generic posts.

Then ask how success will be judged. Reach and engagement can diagnose content, but commercial reporting should also follow enquiries, qualified leads or another meaningful action where the systems allow it.

05

A practical buying checklist

Before appointing a social media partner, ask for direct answers to the following:

  • Which deliverables are guaranteed each month?
  • Who plans, shoots, edits, writes, approves and publishes?
  • What is the turnaround and how many revision rounds are included?
  • Does the client retain ownership and access to every account?
  • What is excluded from the monthly fee?
  • Which metrics will change the next month’s plan?
  • What evidence accurately reflects the agency’s own responsibility?
FAQ

Questions people ask before they choose.

Is ad spend included in social media management pricing?

Usually not. The management fee and media budget should be separated so the client can see what pays for professional work and what goes directly to the advertising platform.

Can a small business start with one platform?

Yes. A focused system on the platform most relevant to the audience is often more useful than maintaining several weak channels.

Are content shoots included every month?

Only when the proposal says so. Shoot time, travel, locations, contributors, equipment, asset volume and delivery formats should be stated explicitly.
